Poker Glossary
Call
To “see” someones bet – to put in the same amount as
the highest bet at the time is calling the bet.
Calling Station
A player who doesn’t bet or raise very often, but will call almost
any bet with any 2 hole cards.
Cap Game
A cap game is where there is a limit on the amount that a player is allowed
to bet during a hand.
Cash Game
Also known as a “ring game” – A game that is played
with a cash buy-in. A player may enter and leave whenever they like (as
opposed to a tournament)
Catch Up
To complete a draw and defeat a player who had a better hand.
Chase
To call one or more bets to see the next card/s when you have a drawing
hand – “James chased that last spade all the way to the river”
Check
When you check you bet nothing and the action keeps moving on to the next
player at the table.
Check-Raise
A strategy to get more chips out of your opponent. You perform a check
raise where you have a strong hand and check it to your opponent, who
predictably bets – Then you raise him 2 to 3 times the size of their
bet.
Chip
Used as currency for betting in poker.
Chip Leader
The player at a table who has the largest chip stack is the chip leader.
Chopped Pot
Where 2 or more players have exactly the same hand, the pot is split evenly
between them
Cold Deck
When a player can’t seem to make a hand because they keep getting
dealt bad cards - They sometimes say they’re playing with a cold
deck.
Collusion
A type of cheating where 2 or more players at a table are working together
to strip everyone else at that table of their chips.
Come Bet
When a player makes a bet or a raise with a drawing hand to build the
pot in anticipation of completing their hand.
Community Cards
Cards that are dealt face up in the centre of the table that every player
may use to make the best hand possible.
Connectors
Two or more cards in numerical order rank – you would have suited
connectors if you held the 8,9 of hearts.
Continuation Bet
A bet made by a player on the flop who has already raised the pot. A continuation
bet is made regardless of whats on the board to represent a made hand.
Cut-off
The player seated to the immediate right of the dealer.
