Poker Glossary
Pair
2 cards of the same value – 3,3
Passive
Refers to a style of play made up of mostly checking and calling –
a passive player usually doesn’t bet or raise and is classed as
a very weak player.
Pat
A made hand – If you held jack king of hearts and the flop came
7,Q,5 of hearts, you would have flopped a flush and have whats known as
a pat hand.
Pay Off
To call a bet when another player at the table is representing a hand
that you can't beat, but the pot is large enough to justify a call - "He
played it exactly like he made a flush, but I had a set so I paid him
off."
Pocket Cards
Also known as hole cards – the 2 cards that you are dealt face down
in texas holdem.
Pocket Pair
Also known as a wired pair – where you are dealt 2 cards of the
same value as your hole cards – if you were dealt 3 clubs, 3 diamonds
– you would have a pocket pair.
Position
Refers to where you are sitting at the poker table – can be either
early, middle or late.
Position Bet
A bet that is made based on the strength of your position (late position)
rather than on the strength of your cards.
Post
where you make the necessary small or big blind bet in Texas holdem
Pot
The money in the middle of the table that you are playing for.
Pot Committed
The situation where there is no point in folding because most of your
chip stack is already in the pot.
Pot Limit
A variation of poker where the largest bet you can make is equal to the
size of the pot.
Pot Odds
The odds the pot is giving you to call a bet.
Pre Flop
Any reference to anything that happens before the flop has been dealt
is pre flop – Steve made a pre flop raise of 4 and a half big blinds.
Probe Bet
A bet made after the flop that is designed to gather information on how
the flop helped your opponents – usually about half the size of
the pot.
Push
Where you bet all in.
